Brown University Transfer Application Requirements
- Minimum GPA: Brown’s transfer student admissions procedure is quite competitive. The Board of Admission considers each application on its own merits, looking for individuals who have excelled academically while growing personally.
- Official Transcripts: Your official high school transcript, as well as transcripts from all previously attended institutions, are required.
- SAT Scores: We require you to provide us copies of your SAT or ACT scores if you are attending an institution that requires you to submit them. Your scores are not required but are requested if you follow a college that does not.
- Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation on college stationery from college lecturers or teaching assistants are necessary. We recommend that one of these references come from a science or math instructor if you plan to pursue an Sc.B. degree.
- Essay: An essay or personal statement is required for admission consideration.
- Application Fee: Candidates for either semester should submit their complete applications, along with the $75 application fee, by March 1st.
- Interview: Personal interviews are not available for transfer students. If the admissions committee requires additional information, you will be contacted personally.
- Other Requirements: Transfer students should not send additional resources such as music, art portfolios, and writing samples. They aren’t required, and they won’t be looked at.

- Minimum Grade: A course must be completed with a grade of “C” or above to be transferable. (If it is evident that “Pass” is comparable to at least a “C” mark at that institution, a PASS/FAIL grade is permitted.)
- Credits (Min/Max): A transfer applicant must have completed a minimum of 8 courses or enroll as a first-year student. A maximum of 15 credits or courses can be transferred from a two-year or four-year university.

What is the procedure for applying for transfer admission?

Who is eligible to apply as a transfer student, and how many semesters do I need to be enrolled at Brown?
To be considered for transfer admission, you must have completed at least one full year of college (or its equivalent) before enrolling at Brown. Transfer admission is available to part-time and full-time students at authorized two- and four-year colleges.
According to university standards, anyone approved as a transfer must be enrolled full-time at Brown for at least four semesters before receiving their undergraduate degree. As a result, we discourage (but do not prohibit) transfer applications from students who have completed more than four semesters of college before enrolling at Brown. In exceptional instances, we accept transfers with more than four semesters of college work completed.
Students who are currently enrolled in a dual enrollment or early admission program in high school should apply to Brown as first-year applicants.
Will the classes I’m taking right now transfer to Brown?
Most liberal arts courses taken at other colleges and universities are generally transferrable to Brown. Brown will transfer credit for courses taken at other universities similar to those offered in our program. Correspondence courses, online courses, courses taken during summer programs, and courses taken as part of a dual enrollment curriculum will not receive transfer credit from Brown. Brown will not accept AP test scores as transfer credit. University courses that have to be taught remotely due to the epidemic will be considered for transfer credit like in-person courses. Any courses taken remotely due to the epidemic will have no bearing on admissions or transfer credit.
Before acceptance, the University will not review transferrable credit. After a student enrolls, the amount of transferable credit is established. When an applicant is accepted, their acceptance letter will state their semester level (first-semester sophomore, second-semester sophomore, or first-semester junior). Still, the number of transferable courses will not be determined until the College receives an admitted applicant’s final college transcript (typically in the summer for fall acknowledges or winter for spring accepts) before they enroll.
What is the deadline for submitting my transfer application, and when can I expect to hear back?
The deadline to apply for transfer admission is March 1st. In early May, you will receive a decision.
Is it possible to apply for a fee waiver, and how can I do so?
We will accept a signed letter from an authority at your present college as a fee waiver if the transfer application fee causes financial hardship. A dean, academic adviser, or financial aid officer at your current college should send the letter to Brown’s Office of College Admission. The letter should be written on the letterhead of your present college, hand-signed by a college administrator, and explain briefly why the application price is a financial hardship.
