Colchester Royal Grammar School, the UK’s top independent selective grammar school, has an acceptance rate of just 8.6 percent. In 2018 this figure was 8.7 percent and in 2017 it was 8.5 percent.
In contrast, Colchester has a result-boosting ‘attainability index’ to ensure that its offer of GCSE grades A*-E is as wide as possible for all pupils who meet the admission criteria – including those with a less than stellar academic record. This is achieved by a combination of GCSE retakes and an admissions ‘plus’ – a grade 9 in triple science or triple music.
This ‘value-added’ approach to selection is used by most leading independent schools, but it’s rare in the state sector and is virtually unknown for selective grammar schools. In most cases the expected attainment is based on the best eight or even seven subjects.
