The University’s Profile 

The predecessor of Emily Carr University of Art and Design was Vancouver Art School, also known as ECUAD. In 1925, ECUAD was established and became the first degree-granting institution in British Columbia specifically for visual arts and performing arts students. 

In 1978, it was named after Canadian artist Emily Carr and was designated as a provincial research institute in the same year. Moved to Granville Island in 1980 and opened two buildings.

Between 1995 and 2006, ECU was awarded: Bachelor of Arts BFA and BDes, honorary degrees: Honorary Doctor of Letters (dl litt .), Honorary Doctor of Laws (dl Laws .), Honorary Doctor of Technology (dt .Technology .), Bachelor of Media Arts Degree (BMA) and Master of Applied Arts (MAA) training and construction unit qualifications provide students with higher education in teaching and research, with complete teaching facilities and abundant internship and employment opportunities for their students.

On September 5, 2017, the school moved from Granville Island to a new campus at 520 Great Northern Way. This specially constructed building is the former industrial base of Finning International, located in the east of Vancouver and close to downtown Vancouver.

About Emily Carr University of Art and Design

The predecessor of the university can be traced back to the Vancouver College of Decorative and Applied Arts, established on October 1, 1925. 

This educational institution is the first degree-granting institution created specifically for visual and performing arts students in British Columbia. The university was founded in 1978 by Canadian artist Emily Named after Carr.

The Emily Carr College of Art and Design is one of the oldest post-secondary colleges in British Columbia and the only institution dedicated to professional education and learning in the arts, media, and design.

On April 28, 2008, the Government of British Columbia announced that it would amend the University Act. The Provincial Legislative Assembly regarded Emily Carr College of Art and Design as a complete university and named it Emily Carr College of Art and Design. The university began operations under the new name on September 1, 2008.

On September 5, 2017, the university moved from its campus on Granville Island to its new campus at 520 East Avenue, close to the Great Northern Way between Main Street and Clark Street. This purpose-built building was once the industrial base of Finning International and is located in the Mount Pleasant community of East Vancouver.

Emily Carr focuses on sustainable design, photography, new media, visual art, media, interactive media, animation, industrial design, product design, ceramics, sculpture, communication design, illustration and fine art.

Emily Carr University of Art and Design Application Requirements 

  1. Academic Work

Applicants are required to provide the following types of works:

Drawing, Oil painting;

A sample of animation/movie/video;

Sketches of storyboards or sub-cameras;

Behavioral painting samples;

Photography;

Website design, media design, industrial design works;

Sketch; proposition creation.

The college strongly recommends that applicants provide multiple types of works so that the professor can understand the applicant’s imagination, creativity, and communication skills. 

Thereby increasing the chance of admission. The college hopes that applicants can use traditional and modern techniques and tools to express their ideas. And it is required that at least 50% of the works submitted by the applicant are hand-painted or hand-made. 

The college refuses to accept photocopied works or substitute works by others.

Each applicant shall provide at least 10 works and a maximum of 15 works. 

More so, Sketching/oil painting/creation is best done on a piece of drawing paper or canvas. The drawing paper/canvas must be flat. The school does not accept glass and frame works for the time being.

2. Thesis

Applicants must submit an essay of at least 500 words. The content is the review of movies, TV, works of art, exhibitions, or the evaluation of the author’s and director’s artistic techniques. The article should focus on the theme of “thoughts after reading this work”.

3. Personal Resume

Applicants need to provide a resume to the college. The content includes work/study experience, hobbies, daily life experience, and contribution to the community where you live. Applicants should state why they should apply to Emilie Carr College of Art and Design and why they can become a qualified Emilie Carr College of Art and Design student.
