Harvey Mudd College Transfer Acceptance Rate

Harvey Mudd College is a private residential liberal arts college of science, engineering, and mathematics, founded in 1955 and located in Claremont, California, United States.

The college emphasizes instruction in the applied sciences and engineering and is known for its small size (currently around 800 students), academic stress on student collaboration, and an unorthodox approach to the traditional undergraduate experience. It is one of the institutions of the contiguous Claremont Colleges which share adjoining campus grounds.

International transfer students are admitted to Harvey Mudd College on the same basis as U.S. citizens and permanent residents who transfer from U.S. institutions of higher education. The admissions process is designed to admit students who not only have the academic potential to succeed at Mudd but also have a strong interest in engineering, science or mathematics and are committed to being active, engaged members of our community.

If you would like to apply as an international transfer student, you must first complete at least one full year of college coursework prior to your intended semester at Harvey Mudd College. If you are studying abroad, it may be possible for you to complete your studies at Harvey Mudd College if you meet the following criteria.

  • Mudd HMC needs a minimum college GPA of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.33).
  • The college also demands a minimum GPA of 3.0 in high school.

Harvey Mudd Tranfer Acceptance FAQs

Is a transfer to Harvey Mudd right for you?

Harvey Mudd College and its students are a special group of people. Consider the following factors while choosing whether or not to apply for a transfer to Harvey Mudd:

  • Regardless of your previous academic experience, you have taken a significant number of courses that are compatible with courses in our Common Core Curriculum.
  • You are willing to attend Harvey Mudd for at least two years as a full-time student (this is a requirement).
  • You want to be a part of a residential campus community. Although it is not necessary, nearly all students reside on campus for the whole four years.
  • You show a genuine willingness to get involved in the Harvey Mudd and Claremont Colleges communities outside of the classroom.

What Are The Required Materials For A Transfer?

  • Common Application or Coalition Application. Either application requires a personal essay. Harvey Mudd is undecided about which of the two applications he prefers.
  • $70 application fee or fee waiver. Fee waivers are offered to people who can show that they are in financial need. Use the Common Application or Coalition Application to request a fee waiver. To confirm your request, the application platform may require your counselor to fill out a fee waiver form. Fee exemptions from the ACT, College Board, and NACAC are also accepted.
  • Required Additional Writing. There is a second essay and a short answer response that must be completed detailing:
  1. What prompted you to submit an application to Harvey Mudd College? What aspects of the HMC curriculum and community pique your interest? (maximum of 500 words)
  2. Many students come to HMC because they don’t want to give up their passions for the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts (or HSA as we call it at HMC). Describe briefly what you’d like to learn in your ideal HSA class. (maximum of 100 words)
  • Mid-Term Report. If you’re presently enrolled, you’ll need to fill out this form, which includes midterm grades and faculty comments. If you are not taking classes in the spring semester, you do not need to fill out this form.
  • College/Transfer Report. To be completed by an advisor, dean of students or registrar.
  • Two Recommendations. To be completed by college instructors.+
  1. College instructor in math or science.
  2. College instructor in humanities or social sciences.
