Will my credits from a previous institution be transferable?

The number of credit hours and grades completed at one or more community colleges that can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree cannot exceed 72 credit hours and grades.

To graduate from the university with a minimum of 26 semester credit hours, transfer students must complete one Critical Thinking course in Core I and one Critical Thinking course in Core II of the General Education Curriculum.

To graduate from Marshall University with less than 26 earned semester hours, transfer students must complete the First-Year Seminar as well as all other courses in the General Education Curriculum that have not been satisfied by transfer courses.

To finish their degrees, transfer students must also complete 6 hours of writing-intensive credits, 3 hours of multicultural or international coursework, a capstone project in their field of study, and any other degree requirements that are not met by transfer courses.

Marshall University accepts transfer credits and grades achieved for all baccalaureate-level courses taken at any qualified baccalaureate degree-granting institution in the West Virginia state-supported system of higher education, including Marshall University.

Students transferring from Community Colleges or Branch Colleges should be aware of the following:

It is possible to apply 72 hours of credits and grades from community colleges or branch colleges toward your Marshall University graduation requirements if you have completed them.

Transfer Credit is being evaluated as follows:

Transfer students should apply to Marshall University and submit their credentials at least one month before the start of their first course to ensure that their credits are properly evaluated.

All documents and credentials submitted to the Admissions Office become the property of Marshall University and will not be returned or made available to third parties without the prior written consent of the applicant.

Marshall University accepts all transferable coursework from authorized colleges that have been approved by the university. Credit for course work completed at another accepted and accredited institution transfers at the same level as the course work completed there. This is crucial to note since, to graduate from Marshall, students must have a certain amount of upper-division credits (300/400 level credits), which is defined by the institution where they are enrolled.

Consider the following scenario: A student attends another institution and then transfers to Marshall and enrolls in ENG 320, American Literature. While the student will receive credit for ENG 320 at Marshall, the credits will be counted as lower-division (100- to 200-level) credits at that institution.

However, grades earned for coursework taken at other institutions are included in the overall GPA calculation (which includes courses taken at Marshall University and other institutions), but they have no impact on the Marshall GPA calculation (which includes only Marshall University coursework), except D/F repeats.

What is the procedure for transferring credits from another institution

Identify yourself as a transfer student on your application and request that your previous institution transmits copies of your official transcripts to the Marshall University Admissions Office when you apply for admission to the university.

Admission Requirements for Transfer Students in General:

All transfer students must be eligible to return to the university that they attended most recently to complete their degree. In addition, transfer students who have less than 30 semester hours earned must complete one of the requirements listed below before being admitted.

To get admitted as a freshman, you must meet the current admissions requirements; OR

Have completed 12 graded college-level semester hours while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.00.

Transfer students who do not meet either of these standards may file an appeal with the Admission Appeals Committee, which will hear their case. Students who are admitted with a cumulative grade point average of less than 2.00 are considered to be on academic probation and are only permitted to register for a limited amount of credit hours.
