The Occidental College campus is located in Eagle Rock, 8 miles from downtown Los Angeles. For college students, internships, restaurants, nightlife, and other activities abound in downtown LA. First-year students must reside on campus and are permitted to drive.

That’s a good thing, considering major attractions like Venice Beach, Disneyland, and Hollywood’s Sunset Strip are all within an hour’s drive of the campus. Parking on campus is free with a permit, and around two-thirds of students drive. There are more than 100 clubs and organizations on-campus for students to join.

There are a few social sororities and fraternities at Occidental, a gender-neutral organization, and a multicultural sorority. The orange and black Tigers, members of the NCAA Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, have even more students competing on its sports teams. CalTech and Art Center College of Design are additional options for Occidental students, including joint degrees from CalTech, Columbia University, and Southern California’s Keck Graduate Institute.

This liberal arts college is known for its diverse undergraduate student body, with around 50% of students being Caucasian, 15% being Asian, another 15% being Hispanic, and 5% Black. Women account for more than half of all students.

Many films, including “Clueless,” “Orange County,” “Jurassic Park III,” and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” have highlighted Occidental’s magnificent campus. Marsha Evans, the former president and CEO of the American Red Cross; Andrea Elliott, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times; and Robert Richter, a documentary producer whose work has aired on major networks such as PBS and the Discovery Channel, are among the school’s notable alumni. Former President Barack Obama spent two years at Occidental before moving to Columbia.

FAQs

What is the difference between the March 1 priority deadline for Fall Transfer Admission and the final April 1 deadline?

Students who apply by the priority deadline of March 1 will be notified of their admission decision before the end of April. Students who use Oxy before the April 1 final deadline hear back from the university between the end of April and May. Students have access to the same need-based financial aid and merit scholarships regardless of which deadline they apply by. The deadline by which a student applies has no bearing on acceptance rates.

What classes should I take to improve my chances of being accepted?

Students are encouraged to enroll in classes most closely related to Oxy’s Core requirements. Individual primary needs—fundamental courses—should be looked at for advised course selection for students who will enroll at Oxy with junior standing (64 units of credit).

Is there a limit to how many units I can move to Oxy?

Students can transfer a maximum of 64-semester units or 96 quarter credit units. After a student is admitted to the College, the Registrar’s Office will give a credit evaluation.

Are there any majors you can’t transfer into or have more stringent requirements?

We anticipate that entering juniors will have completed classes in their desired major before arriving at Oxy. By the time they enroll at Oxy, students interested in Economics should have finished calculus, microeconomics, and macroeconomics study. Transfer students will not pursue the Media Arts and Culture (MAC) major due to high demand and the specific sequencing of classes. Still, they are encouraged to confer with MAC faculty to establish a five-course MAC minor. Interested students should visit department homepages and the Oxy course catalog for detailed information on particular significant requirements. Students interested in pursuing a Music major must finish three full years of school at Occidental due to the course sequencing and expectations of the Music major.

What classes are transferrable to Oxy and which are not?

College-level studies done at an authorized college will earn Oxy course credit. Course credit for remedial math and English classes will not be given since they are not considered college level. Credit for a course does not always equate to credit toward a specific major or Core requirement. Our Registrar’s Office and individual departments determine whether a class will meet a particular major or Core requirement on a case-by-case basis.

Each year, how many transfer students enroll at Oxy?

In the spring, we usually enroll 5-10 transfers, and in the fall, we often enroll 30-40 transfers. Transfer students make up about 8% of the total student population.

Are financial aid and merit scholarships available to transfer students?

Yes. Financial aid and merit scholarships are available to transfer students. We meet every demonstrated need 100 percent of the time. To be considered for need-based help, you must complete the FAFSA and CSS Profile. The deadlines differ depending on the state of the application.

When will students be informed of their acceptance status?

In mid-December, students who applied for spring admission are notified. Students who have applied for fall admission will get notifications in early May and early June.

Do you accept students who haven’t attended college before?

Yes. Students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences are welcome. Our section on academic requirements gives you all the details you need to know about your admissions eligibility. Before applying to Occidental, students who have not attended school in the last two years are recommended to enroll in full-time coursework. Please be aware that the College does not provide lodging for married students or families. Students with preschool-aged children are encouraged to explore our Child Development Center’s possibilities.

Oxy is a residential institution that encourages students to live and learn together. Every residence hall on campus is part of the institution’s intellectual community. To that aim, we’ve implemented a regulation mandating all first-year students to live on campus for the first three years. On a case-by-case basis, exceptions to this rule are given. Transfer students should contact Residential Education and Housing Services to request a housing waiver. Students with senior standing are exempt from the housing policy and may live on or off-campus.

Is it necessary for transfer applicants to have an interview?

No. Interviews are not required, but transfer applicants who want to share their experience or learn more about Occidental are welcome to do so. Please look at our interview tips and find out more about how to sign up for an interview.

Is there an incoming transfer student orientation? Is there a difference between the fall and the spring?
Incoming transfer students can attend fall and spring orientations at Oxy. Students will meet with academic advisors, select classes, mix with other transfers and attend workshops designed to familiarize them with the College, educational programs, and community during orientation. Oxy’s orientation webpage has thorough information about each program, and once you’ve been accepted, you’ll receive additional information to help you adjust to Occidental.

Do you know if Oxy is a member of the Yellow Ribbon Program? What is the mechanism behind it?

Occidental can support veterans and their spouses/dependents through the Yellow Ribbon Program, which assists students with tuition and fees, thanks to a partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Financial Aid webpage has information about eligibility and sample awards.

Is it possible to get the housing requirement waived?

Oxy is a residential institution that encourages students to live and learn together. Every residence hall on campus is part of the institution’s intellectual community. Transfer students are usually housed on campus, but they can apply for a housing waiver through Residential Education and Housing Services. (Please note that we do not provide lodging for married students or families.)

Is it possible for transfer students to study abroad?

Yes. Transfer students are welcome to apply to one of Oxy’s many study abroad programs. Students who transfer to Oxy as sophomores have more significant opportunities to study overseas than students who share as juniors. Students interested in participating can contact our International Programs Office to learn more about the prerequisites.
