Phillips School Andover was founded in 1778 and is one of the best private schools in the United States. This educational institute was the first private boarding high school established in the entire country and is still operating today.
George Washington, the first president of the United States, visited the school at the end of the 18th century. After Washington, he sent his nephew to Phillips College to study.
Uncle Samuel Jr. established Phillips Exeter College in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1781. Moreover, Phillips College and Phillips Exeter College are also known as the two most outstanding private high schools in the States.
The intense competition between these two prestigious educational establishments has a history of more than two hundred years.
After the college merged with the adjacent Abbot Academy in 1973, the school became a co-educational school. Abbott College was founded in 1829 and was the first official girls’ school in New England.
After the merger of the two schools, the new school still retains the tradition of Phillips College.

Funding and Acceptance
Phillips College is one of the richest private academic establishments in the United States. According to the data released on May 1, 2008, the school received a total of 820 million US dollars in donations.
Moreover, in the 08-09 school year, according to the decision of the board of directors, the college decided to implement the need-blind admissions policy, thus becoming two schools in the United States that implement this policy together with Phillips Exeter College.
In the 2009-10 academic session, the board of directors decided to adopt this admission method even when the school was facing huge financial pressure, thus becoming the high school in the United States that adopted this policy.
However, do not that the policy allows the admissions office to separately review the funding application materials and the general admission application materials, and the interviewer and material reviewers do not view the applicant’s funding request.
Therefore, students applying for financial aid will not be rejected by the school because of financial difficulties. To this end, 42% of school students have financial aid, and the total aid in 2009 was $14.6 million.
Nevertheless, the school has an acceptance rate of 16% making it of the most difficult private schools to get admission in the United States. In 2008, the college received a total of 2,386 completed application materials, and a total of 457 students were admitted.
