PSU Education Abroad follows the CDC and Department of State (DoS) rules to select which locations students may visit.
While students can petition to travel to DoS Level 3 nations, final decisions are determined based on a review of local authorities’ information, including trending case rates, hospitalizations, travel availability, quarantine and visa requirements, etc. At the time of the petition, the decisions are valid.
The University’s International Travel Risk Assessment Committee reserves the authority to recall students back home if the DoS Advisory level changes to 4 or if the capacity to maintain on-site safety levels changes.
Is it possible for PSU students to travel abroad right now?
During the Academic Year 2020-21, several PSU students will participate in Study Abroad programs. According to university policy, students traveling to and faculty/staff guiding students to nations with a US Department of State Advisory Level 3 must obtain special approval from the University’s International Travel Risk Assessment Committee.

Is it necessary for PSU students to get the Covid vaccine before going abroad to study?
All PSU students and staff, including those studying or directing programs overseas, are subject to the Covid vaccination obligation. Furthermore, an increasing number of nations demand confirmation of vaccination before to admission, and/or program providers may require immunization prior to travel. Depending on the time of your last dosage, you may also need a booster to be deemed “completely vaccinated.”
What factors does the Education Abroad Office consider when deciding whether or not my study abroad program will be canceled?
For up-to-date information on on-the-ground developments, PSU monitors Department of State Travel Advisory levels, local news, partner insights, and a large network of Higher Education International Education professionals. Prior to departure, an assessment of the feasibility of presenting programming will be done in consultation with program providers and abroad university partners. The International Travel Risk Assessment Committee at PSU has developed a travel policy based on the Department of State’s Travel Advisory Levels.
Currently, PSU Approved Programs in Level 1 and 2 Advisory Countries are allowed to operate. If the program is still running, students who wish to travel to or stay in countries with an Advisory Level of 3 must petition the Risk Management Team to continue. Travel to nations with a Level 4 Advisory will be canceled automatically.
What happens if my show isn’t picked up?
If your program is canceled for the health and safety of students, the Education Abroad office will contact you with particular information about your situation. Prior to confirming, you should carefully study the return terms for your program. The Education Abroad Office will work closely with you to establish academic continuity so that you can earn credit for the work you have completed.
Depending on your situation, you may be able to switch to online education, receive half credit, or defer to a later term. Any returns will be determined by the date of cancellation, the program provider’s refund policy, and the type of program you are enrolled in.
What if I apply and then change my mind about my degree of travel comfort?
Most programs strive to provide as much flexibility as possible so that students can assess the situation and their level of comfort as soon as feasible before departing. As a result, the program (and the Education Abroad office) will have clear timelines for making final decisions without incurring additional charges, as well as what happens if you change your mind after that time.
However, because this varies by program provider, term, and other factors, you should double-check the confirmation specifics and schedule relevant to your program before submitting your confirmation.
What if I contract COVID-19 while traveling?
PSU Education Overseas collaborates with a variety of programs, all of which have fully defined methods for dealing with crises and maintaining health and safety while abroad. For their time abroad, all PSU students are expected to have complete medical insurance. Students should contact their program or university’s contact person, and then follow the unique guidelines for each location.
