Requirements To Become A Nurse In Canada As An International Student
There are six classes of registration: General, Extended, Temporary, Special Assignment, Emergency Assignment, and Non-Practicing.
To practise nursing as an RN or RPN in Ontario, internationally educated nurses (IENs) must hold a current General Certificate of Registration with the CNO. To become eligible for General Class Registration, IENs will need to meet the following eight registration requirements:
- Proof of Canadian citizenship, Permanent Residency or authorization to work in Canada.
- Completion of a nursing program that is equivalent to an Ontario 4-year bachelor’s degree in nursing or a practical nursing diploma.
- Evidence of nursing practice in the category for which the IEN is applying within the 3 years prior to issuance of a Certificate of Registration.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN for those applying for RN, or the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE) for those applying for RPN.
- Successful completion of the RN/RPN Jurisprudence Examination.
- Evidence of language proficiency in either English or French.
- Report past offences, findings and other specified matters.
- Meet College requirements related to health and conduct.

Courses Offered In Nursing Programs in the Canada for International Student
LPN and LVN Training Programs
Entry-level training for licensed practical nurses and licensed vocational nurses can be obtained via 1-year educational programs offered at technical schools, vocational schools or community colleges. LPN/LVN programs involve both lecture-type classes and hands-on clinical practice in a hospital or clinic. Typical courses include anatomy, first aid, nutrition and physiology.
Associate’s Degree in Nursing
In order to become an RN, candidates need to have earned at minimum an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN). Completing this degree program allows graduates to take the licensing examination to become RNs. Common courses include anatomy, nutrition, adult care and medicine practices.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
