Swarthmore College Overview

Swarthmore College was founded in 1864 and is a private institution. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 1,437 students (fall 2021), a suburban environment, and a 425-acre campus. Swarthmore College is 11 miles southwest of Philadelphia, far enough away to be certified as an arboretum on its 425-acre campus. The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) created the school, although it no longer has a religious association. On campus, there are more than 100 organizations in which students can participate, and over 40% of students study abroad.

Swarthmore has approximately 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports teams, with mascot Phineas the Phoenix cheering them on. There are just two fraternities and one sorority on campus. Despite the fact that only freshmen are expected to reside on campus, less than 10% of students do.

Through the Tri-College Consortium, Swarthmore College students can attend classes at Bryn Mawr College and Haverford College. Swarthmore, unlike most other liberal arts universities, has an undergraduate engineering department.

The Crum Regatta, in which students race homemade boats down Crum Creek, and Worthstock, which involves live music, dancing, and cuisine, are two of Swarthmore’s unique traditions. Nancy Grace Roman, the “mother of the Hubble telescope” and NASA’s first chief of astronomy in the Office of Space Science; former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate Michael Dukakis; and Robert Zoellick, former president of the World Bank, are among the notable alumni.
